The smallest island in the Archipelago of the Azores, with 17.13 km2 and around 300 inhabitants, it makes it one of the more beautiful and better preserved islands in the region, where the talk from the locals reveals, still, in many phrases, the archaic roots of a language that isolation has made to preserve.
Discovered simultaneously with the island of Flores it's populating was much later, dating to around the XVI century. It's small dimension and the isolation, provoked by the inexistence of a safe seaport, lead to the development of a agro-pastoral society with traditional standards, although the improvement of communications has contributed to the improvement of wellbeing and progress of the population and where the cultivation of corn, potato, cabbage... was the only form of substinence.
Here you will find the smallest, and most unique, vila in Portugal where crime and theft are unknown on the island, which is where it has never had a jail.
Finally and for those who appreciate the simple and naturally delicious things, the cheese, of artisan recipe, accompanied by corn bread will be a great memory, of an island that by being small shows well it's greatness in it's hospitality and simplicity.

Festivities
The Holy Ghost Festivals have, as well, on this island a charactaristically Azorean devotion. The island's patron saint, Our Lady of Miracles, has it's pilgrimage on the 15th of August and it is the largest festival on Corvo.

Things to See
Vila Nova do Corvo: travelling through the narrow roads of Vila Nova do Corvo, with cobblestone polished for it's use, is like travelling back in time to appreciate it's facades made for stone, black with white trims on the windows and doors, to feeling the lonliness that surrounds the small vila in the blue of the ocean, in the green of the scenery. Observing some doors still have the old fashioned wooden locks on their doors which that, with it's lack of metal from other times, locked the doors of the houses and tool sheds. Deserving also of a visit is the Our Lady of Miracles Church, patron saint of the island. In some houses you can still see the looms in use, memory of a tradition of embroidery nearly lost, where they make cloths of thick wool, done through a tradional, complex and curious process.
Caldeirão: Crater of an old volcano that gave origin to the island and forms Monto Grosso, has 300 meters in depth and 3400 meters in perimiter. At the bottom of the two calm lagoons there are small islands that traditions associates it with the representation of the archipelago of the Azores(excluding Flores and Corvo). Magnificent horizons from the summit of Caldeirão.
Rock Formation and Islet: The rock formation of cavaleiro, legendary figure that points to the west is a statue the indicates America...earning the reference by chronologists and historians. Other rock formations of phantasmic shap, like the pointed Marco, cuts the coast. And various small islets dot the limpid blue sea.
Windmills: Close relatives of the contraptioons that the Moors left in mainland Portugal, the windmills of Corvo are different from the other islands in it's triangular sails made of cloth, in the interior mechanism that spins the propellor to accompany the winds. Trunks of black rock, strapped down, have only one opening to the outside through a door.

Touristic Guide
Appreciating the beauties of the depths and the enormous variety of fish that live in the waters is one of the attractions that Corvo offers to the underwater observers. Fishing along the rocky coastlines or by boat offers as well, great catches.
For those who like to travel to visit the Caldeirão going along the sideroad up to Serrão Alto is a trip full of attractions, of interesting scenery, of opportunities to understand and where the Corvinhos(the name given to the locals) live.
